A Build Your Career teacher externship is a wonderful way educators can connect directly with our Carolinas AGC (CAGC) member employers and BYC Ambassadors to learn more about the construction industry, our workforce needs and challenges, as well as educational and employment opportunities available for their students. CAGC employer members can host teachers either live or virtually for half-day, full-day or multi-day externships.

Most of these externships are accompanied by an employer-sponsored stipend and can also count toward accredited continuing education units (if pre-approved by the NC Department of Public Instruction or the SC Board of Education; CEUs would be accredited either directly through the above-mentioned entities or a third-party moderator).

During these informative externships, employers will share with educators what competencies and skill sets they find valuable in an entry level workforce, their true job descriptions, their “process” within the industry, who their end customers are, how they upskill and train their workforce, and much more. Teachers can then take the information they learn from employers during our BYC teacher externship program and translate what they learn into situational and workplace experiences for their students.

By aligning classroom content to true workplace and employer demand, teachers are more by this workplace preparedness information to better educate students on what real-world employment will actually be like post-graduation.
