To Celebrate October as Careers in Construction Month, BYC Announces Upcoming Cabarrus County "Touch-a-Truck" Event!

As Carolinas AGC  joins in with other states to recognize October as ”Careers in Construction” month, there are events and activities occurring all across the Carolinas geared toward promoting construction career awareness to students of all ages.  Build Your Career is proud to partner with the Cabarrus County Active Living & Parks division to promote their upcoming inaugural “Touch-a-Truck” event being held Saturday, October 12th, 2019 from 9am – 1pm at the Cabarrus County Arena.

So Just What is “Touch-A-Truck”?

The basic premise is exactly what it sounds like:  a large group of trucks and work vehicles, gathered together in one location where kids (and their parents) have the opportunity to see how they operate while exploring them inside and out!  Attendees can sit in the driver’s seat of a big rig, maneuver the dashboard levers of a bulldozer, honk the horn of a race car, and generally just marvel at these huge trucks and vehicles—all set in a safe and friendly supervised environment full of family-oriented activities.

Touch-a-Truck is an educational community event providing children and adults with plenty of hands-on opportunities to see and touch one-of-a-kind vehicles from the construction and agriculture industries; first responder vehicles such as law enforcement, fire department and emergency medical service units; as well as public works and transportation vehicles.  To help teach children and their parents about the purpose and use of the variety of vehicles onsite, event attendees will also get to meet and interact with the men and women who operate the equipment on a daily basis and learn more about how these types of vehicles assist them in building, protecting, and serving Cabarrus County, and its surrounding counties.

The Cabarrus County Touch-a-Truck event will be a fun, interactive family experience designed to give children an opportunity to see and touch their favorite things on wheels.  This event will be sure to ignite a spark of passion for heavy equipment and evoke curiosity in the construction trades for all those in attendance.  Equipment operator experts, construction professionals and educators will be on site to guide children through the science of trucks with hands-on demonstrations, interactive STEM activities and much more!  Touch-A-Truck is a great family event because it provides kids an opportunity to see these large trucks and commercial work vehicles up close and from the inside, something they might not otherwise ever have the chance to do.

What to Expect:

This is an opportunity for construction company owners and their employees, first responders military personnel, community businesses, utilities and public works agencies to teach children, their parents and attendees from all walks of life, about the various types of equipment used in building trades and infrastructure and to educate them about how these vehicles help build and serve the community they call home.  Byron Haigler, Assistant Director of the Active Living & Parks Division for Cabarrus County and organizer of this amazing event, commented on his excitement about the upcoming Touch-a-Truck festivities:  “This is a free community-wide event for all ages to safely explore various types of vehicles, play games and see spectacular demonstrations.  This fun-filled field day will provide once in a lifetime experiences with endless photo opportunities.  I am looking forward to seeing the excitement on the participant’s faces as they explore this playground of machinery, vehicles and emergency response equipment.  There is something for everyone at this event.”

There will be over 100 vehicles and pieces of equipment the Touch-a-Truck attendees will have the opportunity to encounter and explore, but just to name a few:

  • Construction equipment (dump trucks, cranes, excavators, bulldozers & more!)

  • Drones in action
