Clancy & Theys Construction Company is prominently engaged with the Orlando ACE Mentor Program—working with area high school students to expose them to design and construction careers.  Through their ACE involvement, Clancy & Theys team members work in tandem with participating students and other industry mentors to establish an elaborate process to assist students develop a theme or conceptual project idea that eventually results in a completed construction project.  The company has also recently partnered with a local Wake County area high school to conduct virtual construction site tours to promote industry career awareness to construction program students.

During these recent virtual project site tours, the Clancy & Theys Raleigh team partnered with Athens Drive High School Construction CORE and Carpentry instructor Carl Robbins to walk a local building project site, filming the entire process.  During those virtual tours, a variety of the company’s employees were interviewed by Mr. Robbins and had the opportunity to describe various components of the building process while also detailing their specific role in that process.  These videos were then streamed into the classroom so the construction students could watch the tours in real-time.

The Athens Drive High School construction students also had the opportunity to engage in an informative and interactive Q & A session with the Clancy & Theys site workers to ask questions about what they saw and learned during the virtual tour—in essence, painting the full-scale picture for the students of what the entire building process consists of from start-to-finish.  When asked to comment on his experience working with Clancy & Theys to conduct these virtual project site visits, Carl Robbins remarked,  “I am very grateful for the opportunity to partner with Clancy & Theys Construction Company so we could coordinate these virtual project tours at their area construction sites and to also share this experience with the students in my classes.”

Mr. Robbins wasn’t the only one who had rave reviews for the Clancy & Theys folks who organized these fantastic virtual experiences for the Athens Drive construction class.  The students also offered their testimonials of endorsement:  “I had a lot a fun in the Intro to Carpentry class with the building projects and hands-on learning. But obviously due to COVID, that was not possible so I didn't know what to expect doing virtual learning for carpentry. I thought going to the worksites and us seeing what it's actually like was a pretty cool experience.  So to sum it up, my experience of this class will be a positive one” — Anonymous Athens Drive High School student.

Robbins also shared a few inspirational words to encourage other CAGC member employers to follow the lead of Clancy & Theys and also engage in virtual construction career outreach at their local K-12 schools.  Robbins stated:  "To those who want to get involved and speak to kids wanting to learn what you already know, but not sure how to do it?  As a teacher who has had great success in setting meetings up with local construction companies and doing virtual tours with my students, my advice to you is stop trying to create a ‘perfect’ template to follow, and just go with the flow.  Be yourself.  Talk about how you got to where you are, what kinds of courses and training do THEY need to pursue, and so on.  When recording at your jobsite, take the camera to something important and explain it to them.  What makes it cool?  Why is it there?  What does it do?  Show people working with equipment, driving heavy machinery, different tradespersons doing what they do best.  Bottom line?  Construction sites are cool, and they impress people of all ages so have fun with this."

Clancy & Theys Assistant Project Managers, Tyler Crum & Josh Ferrell, are all smiles behind those face masks during their virtual project site tour

Clancy & Theys recognizes the benefits of developing partnerships with local high schools to engage in virtual construction education outreach, as well as getting involved with community service programs and organizations like CAGC and Build Your Career. Josh Ferrell and Tyler Crum, Assistant Project Managers of the Raleigh Crossing virtual site tour, shared: “We’ve enjoyed being a part of this initiative and helping teachers engage with their students while out of the classroom. As graduates of a construction management program, we always found job site visits were the most beneficial when it came to understanding the construction process and this is a clever way to accomplish this. We look forward to continuing to help out with this new way of educating our future workforce.”
