BYC Receives Generous Donation From the CFMA Charlotte Chapter

On Thursday September 19, 2019, the Charlotte Chapter of the Construction Financial Management Association hosted their 24th annual “Building a Better City” awards banquet.  At this year’s event, scholarships were awarded to ten deserving students pursuing construction-related degrees at local colleges.  CFMA presented scholarships to two Rowan Cabarrus Community College students in Construction Management Technologies, while also awarding eight scholarships to UNCC students in Engineering Technology and Construction Management programs.

BYC Director, Tammy Ford, attended the banquet as a guest and was honored to accept a very generous $4,000 donation from the Charlotte CFMA to the Carolinas AGC Foundation’s Build Your Career workforce development initiative.   During the scholarship presentations, Ms. Ford also had the opportunity to address the CFMA banquet attendees to educate the group about all the various Build Your Career activities and outreach efforts occurring throughout the Carolinas.  Topics covered included the BYC Ambassador and Contractors in the Classroom programs, the new “Building Careers in Construction” image and rebranding campaign, the new BYC website and targeted marketing resources, as well as future plans to develop and implement a CAGC-sponsored Apprenticeship Consortium Program for employers, upcoming construction career fairs and hiring expos and much more.

Nicole Mottershead, Senior Assurance Manager at CAGC member firm Greer Walker and VP of Programs for the CFMA Charlotte Chapter, commented on why the Association chose to bequest the BYC program with this charitable contribution: “The goal of the Charlotte Construction Financial Management Association (Charlotte CFMA) scholarships is to further education in the construction industry and this is why Charlotte CFMA decided to award Build Your Career (BYC) a scholarship this year. BYC’s goal is to tackle workforce development by launching education efforts at all levels, from elementary to college. This is an effort that clearly aligned with our scholarship goals.  We are pleased to be able to support BYC in their effort in tackling a challenge that faces our industry."

BYC is committed to promoting construction career awareness not only to future generations of workers, but also to various groups of displaced workers—all in an effort to close the skills gap in our industry.  “Solving the labor shortage is not something we can presume others will accomplish for us and a win-win for Carolinas AGC, as well as our industry, includes BYC continuing collaborative workforce development efforts in conjunction with our allied industry partners.  It is due to the unwavering support and ongoing patronage of industry constituents and organizations, such as CFMA, that BYC is able to elevate our outreach to the next level.  This generous contribution will allow us to continue ramping up our efforts as we strive to build careers in construction here in the Carolinas,” stated Program Director Tammy Ford.

On behalf of Carolinas AGC, the CAGC Foundation and Build Your Career, we sincerely thank the CFMA Charlotte Chapter for their timely charitable donation to the BYC program!  Our success relies heavily on the support of our industry and it is due to the ongoing patronage of organizations like CFMA, that Build Your Career is able to elevate our workforce development efforts in the Carolinas to the next level.
